Why we call it the Silicon Mountain

Buea's tech community grew on the slopes of Mount Cameroon. The name stuck, and so did the elephant.

Silicon Mountain is the tech ecosystem of Fako Division, with its epicentre in Buea. The name is a play on Silicon Valley and Mount Fako, the highest point in West and Central Africa, which rises above the town.

Built on collaboration

The ecosystem grew from collaboration between universities such as the University of Buea, community groups, innovation hubs, startups and supporting public institutions. It is home to ActivSpaces, Cameroon’s first tech incubator, and to companies such as Njorku, Bohikor, Zinger Systems, Makonjo Media and Digital Renter.

And the elephant?

The elephant on the SMCON logo stands on the mountain: big, patient and impossible to ignore. It is how the community sees itself, and why the elephant is on every lanyard, badge and stage screen at SMCON26.
